Walker Ranch
In Placerita Canyon, the Walker Ranch is home to an historic cabin as well as hiking trails popular with horseback riders. The trails are shaded and cool with moderate grade. They offer views of the Santa Clarita Valley. This site was formerly a working ranch and the setting for a western film. The Walker family included twelve children and lived in a winter cabin as well as a summer one.
The Walker Cabin is connected to the trail system by a self-guided history and nature hike. The park’s main picnic site and a waterfall are also accessible via a network of longer trails. East Walker Ranch Open Space, located near the Walker Cabin Parking Lot, is a 1.6-mile loop trail that offers a great workout.
Gibbon Conservation Center
The Gibbon Conservation Centre is located in the Santa Clarita Valley, Southern California. Its mission is to study and conserve gibbons. The Gibbon Conservation Center (GCC) is the only institution to have bred gibbons from all four genera. It houses five of the seventeen gibbon species that exist. The GCC offers non-invasive observation and research opportunities to scientists and students. It also participates in gibbon Species Survival Plans and helps with gibbon rescue programmes in Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam.
Listen to the beautiful gibbon songs and spend a morning with them. The males, females, and their offspring all sing together in harmony to create a cacophony that you will remember forever. The GCC is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 AM until noon. It’s closed when it rains or during holidays. The cost of observation is $15 for adults and $10 for students & teens. Children under 5 are $5. Admission includes a guided tour.
Melody Ranch Museum
Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio in Santa Clarita still holds true to the values of Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and other cowboy heroes. Built in 1915, the historic movie set originally served as a primary set for Monogram Studios Western films. Autry bought it and renamed Melody Ranch after his hit songs.
Melody Ranch has become a filming and museum. Visitors can see unique Western movie memorabilia in the prop house, including the Purple Pimp Car from Dirty Harry and a Jeep from M*A*S*H.
Melody Ranch also hosts the Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival. The facility can be rented for filming and is currently the main set of HBO’s Westworld series.
